Laurent Barbier is a professional musician, educator, and researcher specializing in jazz saxophone performance, interactive music technology, and digital sound design. A versatile multi-instrumentalist, he plays alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones, as well as flute and clarinet. He also has extensive experience with music production on Ableton Live.

He holds a master’s degree in jazz saxophone performance from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and a Ph.D. in Music Creation and research from Laval University. His investigation explores the relationship between music and cognition, focusing on attention processes in listening and performance, as well as the links between music and meditation. Specifically, his work examines how musical characteristics can support mindfulness in focused attention meditation.

Laurent is also involved in academic collaborations, working with research groups such as PAM (Performance Preparation, Health Support, and Music) and UJM (Université des jeunes musiciens) at Université Laval. He lectures at the Faculty of Music, notably in the CRAN (Certificate in Digital Audio Production) program and the Bachelor’s in Music Production. Passionate about both jazz and electronic improvisation, he integrates composition, interaction, and deep listening into his artistic practice. His approach blends academic rigor with artistic creativity, constantly exploring new ways to enhance human well-being through music.
